FAFSA FSA ID information

To file the FAFSA you and all contributors will need to create an FSA ID. If you’ve filed a FAFSA before you should already have one. The FSA ID is your username and password for logging into your StudentAid.gov account, including your FAFSA, and serves as your electronic signature.

How do I create an FSA ID? 

To create an account, go to StudentAid.gov and click "Get Started." You will need to provide: 

  • Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) 
  • Full name 
  • Date of birth 
  • Email address 
  • Mobile phone number  

You will also need to create a memorable username and password and complete challenge questions and answers so you can retrieve your account information if you forget it. 

Important: A Social Security number, email address, and mobile phone number can only be associated with one FSA ID. If you share an email address with another contributor, then only one of you will be able to use that email address to create an FSA ID. This may mean an individual contributor needs to establish a new email address.

When should I create an account? 

You can create an account at StudentAid.gov at any time, but it is recommended that you create it at least 1-2 weeks before you start filling out the FAFSA form. This will give you time to verify your account and make sure that it is working properly. New accounts take 3 days to be verified.

What is two-step verification and why do I have to set it up for my StudentAid.gov account? 

Two-step verification is a security feature that helps protect your StudentAid.gov account from fraud. When you enable two-step verification, you will be required to enter a code from your mobile phone in addition to your username and password when you log in to your account. 

Does each contributor need a unique phone number or email for multi-factor authentication? 

Yes. Each contributor must have a unique phone number or email for multi-factor authentication. 

Do both parents need to create an account? 

It depends. The FAFSA will provide a parent wizard to help you determine which parent should be a contributor on your FAFSA. It will further help you understand if only one parent/stepparent needs an FSA ID or if they will both need a unique FSA ID.

If the student and/or parent already have an FSA ID, do they need to create another StudentAid.Gov account

No. We recommend you login to StudentAid.gov to confirm you know your username and password (FSA ID) so it is verified and ready to use when the 2024-25 FAFSA opens sometime in December.
